CRIPPLE DRY FLY: PALE MORNING DUN CRIPPLE (PMD) DRY FLY. The cripple tie of the Pale Morning Dun, or PMD. Pale Morning Dun cripples are an important aspect of the PMD mayfly hatch for anglers. Emerging PMD nymphs often get stuck in their nymphal shuck and drift helplessly. Trout key on this stage and can be quite selective. PMD's imitate the mayflies Ephemerella inermis (newly renamed excrucians) or Ephemerella infrequens. The former is more common and can be imitated with flies in sizes 16, or 18. The hatch occurs roughly from June-August depending on your locality, and typically happens from mid-morning to early afternoon. Have a good supply of nymphs, emergers, cripples and adults since the trout can be very selective to stage of the hatch and the size of the imitation.
