The Griffiths Gnat is an old standby for fishing those blizzard-like midge hatches. The idea is to make your fly stand out by presenting a "midge cluster". or a floating raft of lots of midges. Even though your size 16, 18, or 20 gnat looks ridiculously large compared to the naturals, the trout will often key in on large groups of midges and gulp down a mouthful. We call them "gulpers", of course!
