EMERGER FLY: PALE MORNING DUN CDC EMERGER (PMD). The emergent pattern of the of the Pale Morning Dun, or PMD. CDC allows the fly to sit seductively in the surface fill without the addition of fly floatant. Pale Morning Duns are an important mayfly hatch for anglers. PMD's imitate the mayflies Ephemerella inermis (newly renamed excrucians) or Ephemerella infrequens. The former is more common and can be imitated with flies in sizes 16, 18 or 20. The hatch occurs roughly from June-August depending on your locality, and typically happens from mid-morning to early afternoon. Have a good supply of nymphs, emergers, cripples and adults since the trout can be very selective to stage of the hatch and the size of the imitation.
