EMERGER FLY: SPARKLE DUN PALE MORNING DUN (PMD). The Sparkle Dun emerger pattern of the of the Pale Morning Dun, or PMD imitates an important stage when the emerging dun is still trapped in its nymphal shuck and is very attractive to trout! Pale Morning Duns are an important mayfly hatch for anglers. PMD's imitate the mayflies Ephemerella inermis (newly renamed excrucians) or Ephemerella infrequens. The former is more common and can be imitated with flies in sizes 16, 18 or 20. The hatch occurs roughly from June-August depending on your locality, and typically happens from mid-morning to early afternoon. Have a good supply of nymphs, emergers, cripples and adults since the trout can be very selective to stage of the hatch and the size of the imitation.
